Varkala is a cliff-top beach town about 50 km north of the city, still inside Thiruvananthapuram district. Its red sandstone cliffs, a national geological monument, run above Papanasam Beach, and the path along the North Cliff is lined with cafes, yoga shalas and guesthouses that host live music, open mics, fire shows and surf lessons through the November to March season. The town is also a pilgrimage centre: the Janardanaswamy Temple stands above the beach, and Sivagiri Mutt, with Sree Narayana Guru's samadhi, receives pilgrims in yellow for the Sivagiri pilgrimage from 30 December to 1 January every year.
