Statue Junction, named after the statue of Dewan T. Madhava Rao that faces the Government Secretariat, is the stretch of MG Road where the state's politics plays out in public. The pavement outside the Secretariat's gates is the city's standing protest site, and Central Stadium, directly behind the building, hosts Kerala's Independence Day parade, government functions and Onam week stages. Around the junction are the Press Club, the YMCA and several small halls used for book launches, press meets, talks and film-society screenings, along with the bookshops and coffee houses of Pulimoodu. Most city buses between East Fort and Palayam pass through.
