Aakkulam, about 10 km from the centre where Aakkulam Lake meets the sea, changed character when Lulu Mall opened on the NH 66 bypass in December 2021. With around 2.2 million square feet, a 12-screen PVR including Kerala's first IMAX and parking for more than 3,800 cars, the mall is now the city's default for weekend outings, mall-atrium shows, brand launches, kids' activities and festive decor. The government's Akkulam Tourist Village and boat club on the lake add a children's park and adventure rides, and the O by Tamara hotel hosts conferences, weddings and New Year parties.
