Kowdiar is the leafy residential quarter built around Kowdiar Palace, still the private home of the Travancore royal family and not open to visitors. The broad avenue that runs from the palace gates down to Vellayambalam is the city's showpiece road and the usual assembly point for the pageantry procession that closes the state's Onam week. The Trivandrum Golf Club, founded in 1850, and the tennis club are here, and the cafes, bakeries and boutique stores around Kowdiar Junction host small pop-up markets, baking classes and acoustic evenings. Convention halls towards Ambalamukku and Peroorkada take weddings and exhibitions.
