Shanghumugham is the city's own beach, about 8 km west of the centre beside the airport. Evenings are for sunset walks past Kanayi Kunhiraman's Sagarakanyaka, a reclining mermaid more than 35 metres long. The beach is the end point of the Arattu processions from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, the site of bali tharpanam rituals and the main Ganesh idol immersion point. Veli Tourist Village, a few kilometres north where the lake meets the sea, has boating and a floating bridge. The Vettucaud church feast in November and the Beemapally Uroos bring some of the district's largest crowds to this coast.
