New Year's Eve 2026 in Trivandrum: Kovalam, Varkala & City Parties
Updated 2026-10-12 ยท 6 min read ยท by the trivandrum2go team
New Year’s Eve 2026 is a Thursday, and if you are in Trivandrum the celebration is on the coast. Kovalam, 13 km from the city centre, draws the largest crowd in the district to its beach promenade and resort lawns; Varkala’s cliff, 50 km north, hosts a looser party for travellers; and in the city the night is organised around hotel dinners and ticketed DJ events. Kerala’s licensing rules, police road closures and a pilgrimage at Varkala all shape how the evening works, so this guide covers the logistics as much as the venues. Confirmed parties are added to our New Year’s Eve page as they are announced, usually from early December.

Organisers had not published 2026 prices at the time of writing. When they do, compare what a package includes, such as dinner, drinks, the countdown and a room, before comparing the number.
Kovalam: the main event
Kovalam is where most of Thiruvananthapuram goes. By late afternoon on the 31st the promenade behind Lighthouse Beach is full, restaurants have laid their tables out towards the sand, and the crowd builds steadily until the countdown. It costs nothing to be on the beach. Restaurants sell set dinners and reserve their sea-facing tables, so book one if you want to sit.
The resorts on the headlands run the formal version. The Leela Kovalam and other large properties sell gala dinner packages with live entertainment, and most require advance payment. Non-residents are usually welcome with a booking; carry the confirmation for the security gate.
Things to know:
- Road closures. Police normally close the approach roads to private vehicles from the evening and direct cars to designated parking grounds some distance away. Arrive before 5 pm if you are driving.
- Buses. KSRTC runs frequent services between the East Fort stand and Kovalam, and extra buses are sometimes announced for the night, but the return after midnight is slow and crowded.
- The sea. Lifeguards clear the water at sunset. Do not swim after dark.
- Policing. Expect a heavy police presence, checks for drink-driving on every route back to the city and little tolerance for bottles on the beach.
Varkala: the cliff
The cafes and bars along the North Cliff at Varkala each run their own party, with live bands, DJs and fire dancers, and people drift between them along the cliff path. The crowd is younger and more international than at Kovalam, and the mood is closer to a street party than a gala.
Two cautions apply. The first is the Sivagiri pilgrimage, held from 30 December to 1 January every year at Sivagiri Mutt in the town, when pilgrims in yellow arrive from across Kerala. Trains to Varkala Sivagiri station are packed, traffic through the town is regulated and rooms are scarce, so travel on or before the 30th and book well ahead. The second is the cliff itself. Sections of the edge have eroded and been fenced in recent years; stay behind the barriers, especially in a crowd and after a drink.
Varkala is not a place to get back from at 1 am. Plan to stay the night.
In the city
If you would rather not travel, the city’s hotels are the main option. Hyatt Regency Trivandrum in Vazhuthacaud and the larger hotels along the NH 66 bypass sell New Year’s Eve packages built around a buffet dinner, a DJ or live band and a countdown, often with separate family and couples’ seating. Event companies hire convention centres such as Al Saj Arena near Kazhakkoottam for ticketed DJ nights aimed at the Technopark crowd.
Outside the ticketed events, people gather informally on Manaveeyam Veedhi and around the Museum, where the roads are lit for the season. Many of the city’s churches, including St Joseph’s Cathedral at Palayam, hold services late on the 31st.
With family
- Shanghumugham Beach for the last sunset of the year, with food stalls and space for children. Leave by 9 pm, before the roads fill.
- Kanakakunnu Palace grounds. The Tourism Department has run a year-end flower show and light displays here in recent years. The 2026 dates were not announced when this was written; our Christmas page will carry them.
- Lulu Mall and Mall of Travancore keep their festive decor up through the first week of January and run stage programmes in the evening.
- A hotel family dinner with an early seating gets everyone home before the checkpoints and the surge pricing.
The rules that shape the night
Dry day on 1 January. Kerala observes a dry day on the first of every month. Bars, beer parlours and government beverage outlets are closed on New Year’s Day, and outlets see long queues on 30 and 31 December.
Closing time. Bars in Kerala close by 11 pm. Venues that serve beyond that on New Year’s Eve do so under specific permission, so ask what time the bar shuts before you pay for a package.
Music and crackers. In recent years the state has limited crackers at New Year to a short window around midnight, roughly 11.55 pm to 12.30 am, and police have set a cut-off for amplified music soon after midnight. The orders for this year will be issued in late December.
Drink-driving. Checkpoints are set up on the bypass, the Kovalam road and in the city centre. Use a cab or a designated driver.
Beach safety. No swimming after dark, and follow the lifeguards.
A booking timeline
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now to end of November | Book rooms at Kovalam or Varkala if you plan to stay over |
| First half of December | Hotels and resorts announce packages; compare inclusions and book |
| 24โ30 December | Confirm your cab or driver for the night; buy event tickets |
| 30 December | Sivagiri pilgrimage begins; last sensible day to travel to Varkala |
| 31 December, by 5 pm | Be in Kovalam if you are driving |
| 1 January | Dry day; many restaurants open late; beaches are busy again by afternoon |
Getting there and back
- Kovalam: KSRTC buses from the East Fort city stand, about 40 minutes in normal traffic. After midnight, a pre-booked cab is the dependable way home; app cabs surge and are slow to arrive.
- Varkala: trains from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Varkala Sivagiri take about 45 minutes to an hour, then an auto to the cliff. Stay overnight.
- Kazhakkoottam and the bypass: cabs only, late at night. Fix the return before you go.
- City centre: autos and app cabs work, with a wait between 12.15 and 1.30 am.
If you want a quieter start to 2027
Not everyone wants a countdown in a crowd. The 111-day Soorya Festival is still running in the last week of December, and the first days of January bring the city’s best free music: the Swathi Sangeethotsavam opens in the courtyard of Kuthiramalika Palace on 4 January and runs to the 13th. Our Swathi Sangeethotsavam page has the details.
For beach events through the rest of the season, see Kovalam and Varkala events, and for the full list of parties as they are announced, check nightlife listings. If you are in town earlier in December, our IFFK 2026 guide covers the film festival from 11 to 18 December.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to celebrate New Year's Eve near Trivandrum?
Kovalam has the biggest celebration in the district, on the Lighthouse Beach promenade and at resort galas. Varkala's North Cliff is the alternative for a younger, traveller crowd. In the city, hotels such as Hyatt Regency Trivandrum sell dinner-and-dance packages.
What day is New Year's Eve 2026?
Thursday 31 December 2026. New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday.
Is alcohol served on New Year's Eve in Kerala?
Licensed venues serve until their normal closing time on 31 December; bars in Kerala close by 11 pm unless a venue has specific permission. The first of every month is a dry day, so bars and beverage outlets are shut on 1 January.
Can I take my car to Kovalam on 31 December?
Police normally stop private vehicles well short of the beach from the evening and direct them to parking grounds. Arrive before 5 pm, or come by bus or cab and expect to walk the last stretch.
Is Varkala crowded at New Year?
Very. The Sivagiri pilgrimage runs from 30 December to 1 January every year and brings a large number of pilgrims to the town alongside the New Year visitors, so trains, roads and rooms are all under pressure.
What can families do on New Year's Eve in Trivandrum?
Sunset at Shanghumugham Beach, an evening at Kanakakunnu Palace grounds or the malls, a hotel family dinner, or a watch-night service at one of the city's churches.
