About Shanghumugham Beach
Shanghumugham is the city's own beach, on its western edge about 8 km from the centre and right beside the airport. Its landmark is Sagarakanyaka, a reclining mermaid more than 35 metres long sculpted by Kanayi Kunhiraman, and a children's park of traffic signs sits behind the sands. Twice a year the Arattu procession from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple ends here with a ritual sea bath for the deities. Thousands come for bali tharpanam rites, the beach is the main immersion point for Ganesh idols, and it is used for Onam week programmes, beach festivals, kite flying, food stalls and sunset crowds every evening.
