Things to Do in Trivandrum This Weekend: 32 Ideas (2026 Guide)

Updated 2026-10-12 Β· 7 min read Β· by the trivandrum2go team

This is our evergreen list of 32 weekend ideas in Trivandrum, grouped by mood: heritage, outdoors and beaches, food, evenings, family and day trips. Each one names the area and the practical way to get there, because Thiruvananthapuram has no metro and runs on KSRTC city buses, autos and trains. For the events actually happening this Saturday and Sunday, check our live this weekend in Trivandrum page, which updates every morning.

What is on right now (mid-October 2026)

A few dated things are worth knowing before you plan around the evergreen list:

  • The Soorya Festival is running. The 111-day arts season traditionally opens on 1 October and continues into January. See our Soorya Festival page.
  • Navaratri ends this week. Kerala’s Mahanavami holiday is Tuesday 20 October and Vijayadashami is Wednesday 21 October, the morning of vidyarambham. The concert series at the Navarathri Mandapam and the fair at Poojappura run until then.
  • Football: Thiruvananthapuram Kombans play Thrissur Magic at home on Friday 23 October in the Super League Kerala.
  • Ahead: the UST Trivandrum Marathon on 15 November and IFFK from 11 to 18 December.

Heritage and culture

1. Kuthiramalika Palace. Swathi Thirunal’s 1840s palace beside the temple is named for the 122 horses carved under its southern roof. Twenty rooms are open as a museum, seen by guided tour. It is generally closed on Mondays. East Fort; walk from the city bus stand.

2. The Fort on foot. Only Hindus in traditional dress may enter the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, but anyone can walk up to the east entrance, see the gopuram reflected in the Padmatheertham tank and watch the Methan Mani, the old clock whose figure opens its mouth on the hour. East Fort.

3. Chalai bazaar. Travancore’s old wholesale market begins across the road from the fort gate: flowers, spices, brass lamps, bananas by the bunch. Go on Saturday, since many shops close on Sunday. East Fort.

4. Napier Museum and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery. Robert Chisholm’s 1880 Indo-Saracenic museum holds bronzes and ivory, and the gallery next door has Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings. Open 10 am to 4.45 pm; closed Mondays and Wednesday mornings. Museum; bus to Museum Junction.

5. Kanakakunnu Palace grounds. The hilltop palace 800 metres from the museum is the city’s festival ground. On a weekend without a festival it is a free, shaded walk. See what is on at Kanakakunnu Palace.

6. A classical recital. Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan near the Museum and Bharat Bhavan in Thycaud stage dance and music most weeks, usually free and with unreserved seating.

7. A play or production at Tagore Theatre. The state’s main auditorium in Vazhuthacaud hosts touring plays, dance productions and award nights. Vazhuthacaud; 2 km from the railway station.

8. A heritage walk. Volunteer groups run early-morning walks through the Fort, Chalai and Palayam on some weekends. Our heritage walks page lists confirmed dates.

9. Palayam’s three shrines. The Juma Mosque, St Joseph’s Cathedral and a Ganapathy temple stand within a few steps of each other, with Connemara Market and the 1896 VJT Hall close by. Palayam; Palayam bus stop.

Outdoors and beaches

10. Sunset at Shanghumugham. The city’s own beach, 8 km from the centre, has Kanayi Kunhiraman’s 35-metre mermaid sculpture and a line of evening food stalls. The sea is too rough for swimming. City bus from East Fort.

11. Kovalam. Three beaches under the 36-metre Vizhinjam Lighthouse, a promenade of restaurants and, from November to March, live music in the evenings. Kovalam; frequent buses from East Fort.

12. Kerala Arts and Crafts Village. Just before Kovalam, at Vellar, artisans work in open studios and sell bell metal, handloom, woodwork and mural art. Evenings often have performances. Bus from East Fort to Kovalam stops at Vellar.

13. Veli Tourist Village. Where Veli Lake meets the sea: boating, a floating bridge to the beach, giant sculptures and a miniature train. City bus from East Fort.

14. A morning loop at the Museum. Join the city’s walkers on the shaded circuit around Napier Museum and up to Kanakakunnu before 8 am. Free.

15. Aakkulam lake. The tourist village and boat club on the lake sit a few minutes from Lulu Mall, so the two combine easily. Aakkulam; NH 66 bypass.

16. Manaveeyam Veedhi after dark. The 180-metre cultural street near Vellayambalam has wall art, street plays, buskers and food carts every evening. Free. Vellayambalam.

Food

17. A sadya lunch. The vegetarian feast on a banana leaf is served year-round at the city’s vegetarian restaurants at lunchtime, and in its fullest form around Onam. Ask for boli with payasam, the local way to finish.

18. The spiral Indian Coffee House. Laurie Baker’s brick spiral beside the Thampanoor bus station is a working cafe: sit on the ramp, order a cutlet and coffee. Thampanoor.

19. Old-school fried chicken and biryani. The decades-old restaurants around Chalai and Palayam are where locals send visitors for fried chicken with parotta and for biryani.

20. A baking or cooking class. Studios in Kumarapuram run weekend classes on cakes, breads and regional cooking; batches are small, so register a few days ahead.

21. A food festival. Kanakakunnu and Putharikandam Maidanam host public food fairs in the festive months, and hotels run themed food weeks. Check our food festivals page.

Evenings and entertainment

22. Super League Kerala football. Thiruvananthapuram Kombans play home games at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium. The 2026 season runs to 12 December, with home fixtures on 23 October, 8 November and 13 November. Palayam.

23. IMAX at Lulu Mall. The 12-screen PVR at Aakkulam has what was Kerala’s first IMAX screen, plus a food court and atrium events most weekends.

24. A Soorya Festival evening. Dance, music, theatre or film, depending on the week, in halls around Vazhuthacaud and Thycaud between October and January.

25. An open mic or stand-up show. There is no comedy club here, so shows pop up in cafes and hotel halls. Our open mic page tracks them.

26. A film-society screening. Bharat Bhavan has a Friday film screening and Alliance Française shows French cinema with subtitles; both are usually free.

With kids

27. Priyadarsini Planetarium and the science museum. Hands-on galleries and sky shows in Malayalam and English at PMG Junction. Generally closed on Mondays. PMG.

28. The zoo. One of India’s oldest, set in 55 acres of woodland in the Museum compound. Closed on Mondays; go before 11 am.

29. Magic Planet. A full day of illusion, close-up magic and circus shows at the KINFRA park near Kazhakkoottam, open 10 am to 5 pm. More ideas are in our guide to weekend activities for kids.

Day trips

30. Varkala. Red cliffs above Papanasam Beach, a path lined with cafes, and Sivagiri Mutt. About 50 km north; most express trains stop at Varkala Sivagiri. Varkala.

31. Ponmudi. The hill station in the Western Ghats, about 55 km inland, is reached by a road of hairpin bends through tea estates. Go early and check for monsoon road closures.

32. Neyyar Dam or Poovar. Neyyar, about 30 km east, has a reservoir with boating at the edge of a wildlife sanctuary. Poovar, about 30 km south, is where the backwater meets the sea, seen by boat.

Weekend tips

  • Saturday for the Fort and Chalai, Sunday for beaches. Chalai is half shut on Sunday, while Kovalam and Shanghumugham are at their liveliest.
  • Mondays catch out long weekends. The museums, the zoo and Kuthiramalika are generally closed.
  • Carry an umbrella in October and November. The north-east monsoon brings a thunderstorm most evenings; on wet days use our indoor ideas.
  • Eat early. Bars close by 11 pm, kitchens earlier, and the first of every month is a dry day.
  • Arrange the ride back from Kovalam, Kazhakkoottam or the stadium before you go; buses thin out after 9 pm.
