Open Mic Nights in Trivandrum

Trivandrum's open mic scene is small and informal, and the events below are refreshed daily with every mic we can find. There is no dedicated comedy club in the city. Open mics are run by collectives of local comics, poets and musicians who book a cafe, a studio or a small hall for an evening, usually on a weekend, and announce it on Instagram a week or two ahead. Cafes around Kowdiar, Vellayambalam, Pattom and Kazhakkoottam are the usual hosts, and the Technopark crowd supplies both performers and audience for mics on the northern side of town. Manaveeyam Veedhi works as a permanent open stage: on most evenings someone is singing, reading poetry or performing a street play there, with no sign-up and no ticket. Cultural centres such as Alliance Française add conversation evenings and readings, college festivals run their own open stages, and in season the cafes on Varkala's North Cliff hold music open mics for travellers. Touring stand-up comedians from Kochi, Bengaluru and Mumbai play one-night shows in hotel halls and auditoriums, in Malayalam, English or a mix. Slots at open mics are short, around five minutes, and usually need advance registration. Expect a small cover charge or a minimum order.

Good to know

  • To perform, message the organiser as soon as a mic is announced. Line-ups are small and fill within a day or two.
  • Keep to the time limit; hosts flash a light when you have a minute left.
  • Check the language of the mic. Malayalam, English and mixed-language nights each draw a different room.
  • As an audience member, order something. The cafe is usually hosting for free.
  • Events end by about 10 pm, in line with the city's early closing hours.
