About University Stadium
University Stadium in Palayam, opened in 1940 and owned by the University of Kerala, is the older of the two stadiums that sit side by side in the centre of the city. It is used mainly for football and athletics today, but it was Kerala's home cricket ground until the late 1980s and staged the first international cricket match in the state, an India against Australia one-day international on 1 October 1984 that ended without a result. West Indies beat India here in another ODI in January 1988. The synthetic track hosts university, school and state athletics meets, and the ground is used for large public events and sports fixtures through the year.
