About Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple
The Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, dedicated to Vishnu reclining on the serpent Anantha, gives Thiruvananthapuram its name and sets much of its festival calendar. Two ten-day festivals, Alpashi in October–November and Painkuni in March–April, each end with the Arattu, an evening procession in which the deities are escorted on foot by the head of the Travancore royal family to Shanghumugham Beach for a ritual sea bath. During Navaratri, idols brought in procession from Padmanabhapuram are installed near Kuthiramalika and a nine-evening concert series is held in the Navarathri Mandapam. Lakshadeepam, when a lakh of lamps are lit after 56 days of Vedic chanting, comes once in six years, most recently in January 2026.
