About Napier Museum
Napier Museum is the city's best-known building, an Indo-Saracenic hall with a Gothic roof and minarets designed by Robert Chisholm and opened to the public in 1880. Its collection includes bronze idols, a temple chariot, ivory carvings and Javanese shadow puppets. The gardens around it also hold the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, laid out on 55 acres from 1857, the Sree Chitra Art Gallery of 1935 and a natural history museum. The grounds and the old bandstand are a daily meeting place for walkers, and they host band concerts, painting competitions, heritage walks and Onam week programmes. The museum opens from 10 am to 4.45 pm and is closed on Mondays and on Wednesday mornings.
