About Ayyankali Hall (VJT Hall)
Ayyankali Hall is the name given in 2019 to the Victoria Jubilee Town Hall, a gabled, tile-roofed hall built on MG Road in Palayam in 1896 to mark Queen Victoria's jubilee. Still widely called VJT Hall, it was an early meeting place of Travancore's legislative bodies and was renamed in honour of the social reformer Ayyankali. Today it is the city's general-purpose public hall: handloom, craft and book exhibitions run for a week or two at a time, political and literary meetings fill the evenings, and the forecourt is used for trade fairs and commemorations. Entry to most exhibitions is free.
