About Attukal Bhagavathy Temple
The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, two kilometres from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, is the centre of the Attukal Pongala, recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest gathering of women for a religious activity. The ten-day festival in the Malayalam month of Kumbham begins on the Karthika star with the Kappukettu ceremony. On the ninth day, Pooram, women light brick hearths once the temple's main hearth, the Pandara Aduppu, is lit, and cook a sweet rice offering in the open across the city. A 1997 record counted 1.5 million women and a 2009 record 2.5 million; reports put the 2026 gathering on 3 March at about four million. Stage programmes run on the temple grounds every festival evening.
