Around the official programme, hotels and caterers sell Onasadya on banana leaves, offices and housing societies hold pookkalam contests, and Putharikandam Maidanam and Kanakakunnu host Onam trade and food fairs. - Onam week shows are free and unreserved. For headline concerts at Nishagandhi and Central Stadium, be seated an hour before the start.
- Walk the illuminated stretch between Kowdiar and East Fort after 7 pm, or take a city bus; traffic along the route moves at walking pace all week.
- Book Onasadya at hotels a week ahead for Thiruvonam and Uthradam. Many restaurants close on Thiruvonam day itself.
- Napier Museum is closed on Thiruvonam, and most shops shut for the day.
- On procession day the route is closed to vehicles from early afternoon. Pick a spot near the Museum or Palayam and arrive early.
