Diwali (Deepavali) 2026 in Trivandrum

Deepavali in 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, which is also the public holiday in Kerala. By Drik Panchang's Thiruvananthapuram calendar, Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja are both on the 8th, and Bhai Dooj follows on Wednesday 11 November. Kerala marks the day more quietly than the north. The traditional observance is an oil bath before dawn, new clothes, sweets and a round of crackers, and it is kept most faithfully in the Tamil Brahmin streets of Karamana, Valiyasala and the Fort area and among the city's Tamil, Gujarati, Marwari and other north Indian families. That is where the public events come from: community associations and Technopark employee groups organise Diwali nights with dandiya, rangoli and diya-painting contests and potluck dinners, malls such as Lulu Mall and Mall of Travancore put up light installations and run festive sales, and hotels serve Diwali thalis and sweet counters. Chalai bazaar is the place for sweets, lamps and licensed cracker stalls. Because the festival is on a Sunday, most parties will be on Saturday 7 November. This page lists Diwali nights, workshops, markets and festive dinners in Thiruvananthapuram as organisers announce them.

Good to know

  • In recent years Kerala has allowed only green crackers and restricted bursting on Deepavali to 8 pm to 10 pm. Check the state's 2026 order before buying.
  • Buy crackers only from licensed stalls; unlicensed roadside sales are regularly seized in the week before the festival.
  • Chalai is crowded on the Friday and Saturday before Deepavali. Go by city bus to East Fort and walk in.
  • Early November is the north-east monsoon here, with thunderstorms most evenings, so outdoor Diwali nights often shift indoors at short notice.
  • Most community Diwali nights need registration through the association; walk-ins are rarely possible.
